The Ayurvedic system of medicine has been practiced in Sri Lanka from pre Christian era to present date. During the historical period this was the only system of Medicine available to the people of this country.
It is known that the medical science has emerged before the generation of human race. Ayurveda is considered as a part of Atharva veda and Rigveda. These sacred texts were composed before 4500 B.C, thus Ayurveda is treated as the first medical science of the world.
This is the science of life and not merely a description of diseases and their cares. All the different aspects of life from birth to death are narrated in Ayurveda. Thus it is closely interwoven with the human culture. Having its main branches of preventive, curative and health promotive aspects of treatments, Ayurveda deals with the philosophy of life. It has its own philosophical base and where ever necessary it has accepted the philosophical thoughts of other related sciences.
Ayurveda is a combination of science and philosophy which deals with the physical mental, emotional and spiritual components necessary for holistic health.
